HC Starck invests in Nyobolt, an ultra-fast charging, ultra-high power density battery company

Nyobolt markets lithium-ion batteries with record power density and ultra-fast charging capabilities. The company’s technology is based on a decade of fast-charging lithium-ion battery research led by University of Cambridge battery scientist professor lady Claire Gray. Nyobolt’s unique niobium and tungsten anode systems exhibit superior performance over other Li-ion anode technologies. Benefits include:

– Charging time: > 90% charged in – Higher input power density: 10x power solves range anxiety and enables smaller, lighter batteries
– Longer Durability: 10x durability, lowering total cost of ownership for battery life
– Improved safety: wider temperature performance and reduced risk of fire

Such capabilities enable new applications and improved customer experience with targeted end uses like industrial and high performance vehicles, automation (robotics), consumer devices, cordless tools, stationary storage and mobile fast charging. .

While proceeds from HCS’s investment will help fund Nyobolt’s construction of its anode manufacturing facilities and R&D centers, both parties anticipate significant synergies through future collaborations, including:

– Recycling: creating a circular economy for electric vehicle batteries by leveraging HCS’s recycling capabilities, including its innovative and environmentally superior technology for black mass recycling
– Tungsten Supply: A reliable source of critical tungsten materials from HCS, the Western world leader in the tungsten recycling industry
– Cathodic technology: HCS R&D specialists have extensive experience in the development of cathodic coatings
– Know-how and manufacturing infrastructure: in addition to being one of the world leaders in the production of tungsten powder and the recycling of tungsten waste, HCS has an industrial scale in-house laboratory which provides elemental analyzes for battery materials and all kind of chemical and physical properties of inorganic powders.

“This investment marks an important step in our strategy to go further downstream and get closer to consumers by developing innovative new applications, including our recently filed “starck2charge” battery materials product line. Nyobolt’s technology is a real breakthrough that we can help bring to market based on our extensive experience in transferring innovative solutions to large-scale manufacturing. This partnership will also accelerate development towards a circular economy for batteries through improved recycling and new usage patterns.” says Hady Seeyeda, CEO of HC Starck Tungsten Powders.

“I am truly proud that just over two years after the acquisition and integration of HC Starck’s global tungsten business into MHT, we have been able to expand our breadth of business capabilities through the acquisition of a significant stake in Nyobolt. We look forward to working with the Nyobolt team to advance their product offering and partnership opportunities in the manufacture and commercialization of their products, as well as to deliver a complete lifecycle for materials advanced strategies required in Nyobolt batteries.” said Craig BradshawManaging Director of MHT.

Nyobolt Co-founder and Chief Scientist Professor Dame Claire Gray added “we are excited to take our technologies from development to market deployment. We founded Nyobolt following the discovery of new technologies of tungsten-containing anodes with remarkable rapid charge capability to bring these properties to market. in applications affecting all aspects of daily life. HC Starck’s funding will help Nyobolt expand its operations in the UK and United States and provide a more sustainable solution in the energy storage industry. Nyobolt technology will not only enable net zero in both transport electrification, but also clean and renewable energy storage on and off the grid. Thanks to HC Starck’s investment, Nyobolt’s ultra-fast charging, high-power batteries will help pave the way towards achieving clean energy goals set by governments around the world. »

Sai Shivareddy, CEO and Co-Founder of Nyobolt, said, “Fast charging remains a critical unmet need as the world becomes electrified with more sustainable forms of energy – a need our technology addresses. We are excited about the partnership with HC Starck and see it as a stepping stone to increase scale and speed to market, revealing the true potential of Nyobolt technologies. The Series B funding will place Nyobolt in the driver’s seat of a rapidly changing battery industry and allow us to showcase the uniqueness of our battery technology, developed by our team of experts, which is poised to transform the energy storage industry. With HC Starck’s investments and technologies, Nyobolt will expand its manufacturing capabilities while minimizing its carbon footprint through an effective recycling and reuse program.
