PRATTVILLE – The recently concluded Autauga County grand jury session took no action on a fatal wreckage in Prattville that left three people dead, including a father and teenage son.

The death investigation was presented as obvious, said Police Chief Mark Thompson. “If three people die at the same time in Prattville, it goes to the grand jury.”

The four-vehicle wreckage occurred on March 8 at around 7:30 a.m. on the Highway 82 bypass lane between Doster Industrial Parkway and South Memorial Drive, according to accident reports.

Killed in the wreck were Joshua Michael Stuart, 37, of Deatsville; Jonathan Ziba Stuart, 16, also of Deatsville and Quaneisha Lawshawn Jones, 25, of Opelika. The drivers of the other two vehicles sustained non-life threatening injuries, Thompson said at the time.

Joshua Stewart drove a 2019 Ford Fusion and Jonathan was a passenger. Jones was driving a 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

The crash site was near an area where the four-lane divided section of the highway narrows to a two-lane section. Here the outside westbound lane becomes a dedicated right turn lane to Doster Industrial Parkway.

Joshua Stewart was traveling west, behind a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, turning on Doster Industrial Parkway. Jones was traveling east. It “appeared” that Joshua Stewart began to pass the Impala on the driver’s side, in a no-pass zone, the report said.

Joshua Stewart’s Fusion struck the driver’s side of the Impala, then veered into the eastbound lane and hit Jones head-on. The force of the impact caused Jones’ Atlanta to cross the lane eastbound where it came to rest on the shoulder.

The fourth vehicle, a 2020 Honda Accord, was following Jones and struck Joshua Stuart’s Fusion after the head-on collision, causing Joshua Stuart’s vehicle to turn clockwise out of the road and into is immobilized on the shoulder, near the front end of Jones’ Elantra.

This section of the highway has been the scene of many accidents. Work is underway to widen the lane of Highway 82 through Prattville to four lanes, including the section where the fatal wreckage occurred.
