Coimbatore: At least 38 of the 125 applicants, who showed up for the free industrial skills apprenticeship training, were selected for the program in the first phase of mobilization at the government industrial training institute (ITI) here on Saturday.
Selected candidates would be placed in 51 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the district.
The program is organized by the Association of Small Industries of the District of Coimbatore (Codissia) in association with government officials. Among the candidates who showed up for the training were those who completed Class X and postgraduate students.
The 38 selected candidates will receive a basic training of three to six months and will be placed in member industries of Codissia MSMEs for a training lasting one to two years with an allowance of Rs 7,000.
Upon successful completion of the training, they would be issued with a National Apprenticeship Training Certificate which would be valid for working in any industry all over the country and abroad.
The program is being organized with funding from the World Bank as part of the Union Government’s Skills Building for Improving Industrial Value (STRIVE) project. The goal is to train 150 candidates over the next three years with a project expense of Rs 1 crore.
MV Ramesh Babu, President of Codissia, said that as the industry receives orders, it faces a shortage of skilled labor. “Although there is a flow of guest workers, the majority of them are unskilled. Programs like this help fill the void, if we get the right candidates. ”
